Compression hosiery and wound dressings improved patient comfort and healing for venous leg ulcers. Most clinicians would reuse the products, and most patients were satisfied with the treatment.
Area of Science:
- Vascular Medicine
- Dermatology
- Wound Care
Background:
- Patient comfort and satisfaction are crucial for successful venous leg ulcer (VLU) treatment.
- VLUs often have long durations and a high recurrence rate, necessitating effective management strategies.
Observation:
- A study observed 22 patients with VLUs over 12 weeks.
- Treatment involved two-layer compression hosiery and various wound dressings.
- The mean ulcer duration was 10.5 months, with 48% having recurrent ulcers.
Findings:
- Half of the venous leg ulcers healed within the 12-week treatment period.
- Mobility impairment showed a non-significant increase in patients reporting 'no impairment'.
- Ease of donning hosiery was rated excellent/good in 86% of visits; doffing was rated similarly in 78%.
Implications:
- Clinicians expressed high confidence, with 95% willing to reuse the product combination.
- Patient satisfaction with the treatment regimen was reported at 73%.
- This suggests a viable and well-tolerated approach for VLU management.
