MicroRNAs

4.3K
MicroRNA (miRNA) are short, regulatory RNA transcribed from introns (non-coding regions of a gene) or intergenic regions (stretches of DNA present between genes). Several processing steps are required to form biologically active, mature miRNA. The initial transcript, called primary miRNA (pri-mRNA), base-pairs with itself, forming a stem-loop structure. Within the nucleus, an endonuclease enzyme, called Drosha, shortens the stem-loop structure into hairpin-shaped pre-miRNA. After the pre-miRNA...

Area of Science:

  • Molecular Biology
  • Genetics
  • Exercise Physiology

Background:

  • Micro-RNAs (miRNAs) are key regulators of cellular processes like apoptosis and proliferation.
  • Understanding miRNA regulation is vital for advancing health prevention strategies.
  • Physical activity is a potent preventive agent against chronic degenerative diseases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the scientific evidence on the effects of physical activity on miRNA modulation.
  • To explore the relevance of exercise-induced miRNA changes in preventing chronic degenerative diseases.

Main Methods:

  • Comprehensive literature review of studies investigating physical activity and miRNA expression.
  • Analysis of how exercise type, duration, and intensity influence miRNA modulation in human skeletal muscle.

Main Results:

  • Physical activity significantly modulates miRNA expression in human skeletal muscle.
  • The specific effects of exercise on miRNAs are dependent on exercise parameters (type, duration, intensity).

Conclusions:

  • Exercise-induced miRNA modulation plays a role in the health benefits of physical activity.
  • Further research into exercise and miRNAs can inform strategies for chronic degenerative disease prevention.
