Vasectomy is a surgical form of male sterilization that involves severing and sealing the vasa deferentia, preventing sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. Because a vasectomy does not impact the testes' ability to produce testosterone, hormone levels, libido, and sexual function generally remain unchanged. While vasectomy is highly effective in preventing pregnancy, with a success rate near 99.85%, rare cases of recanalization (spontaneous reconnection) can occur. Although...

Infertility in Males01:23

Infertility in Males

684
Male infertility affects millions of couples worldwide, arising from various factors that impact different stages of the reproductive process. An endocrine imbalance resulting from conditions like hypogonadism, Klinefelter syndrome, or pituitary disorders can disrupt hormone levels and reduce sperm production. Testicular defects, such as tumors, cryptorchidism, atrophic testes, abnormal sperm morphology, and low sperm count or motility, may arise due to genetic factors, structural...

Spermatogenesis01:41

Spermatogenesis

124.8K
Spermatogenesis is the process by which haploid sperm cells are produced in the male testes. It starts with stem cells located close to the outer rim of seminiferous tubules. These spermatogonial stem cells divide asymmetrically to give rise to additional stem cells (meaning that these structures “self-renew”), as well as sperm progenitors, called spermatocytes. Importantly, this method of asymmetric mitotic division maintains a population of spermatogonial stem cells in the male...

Male Sexual Response: Erection & Ejaculation

Sexual stimulation can take various forms, such as physical touch and visual or auditory cues. When this happens, the parasympathetic reflex in the sacral portion of the spinal cord is activated. This reflex stimulates the release of nitric oxide (NO), which then dilates the arterioles in the penis, increasing blood flow to the erectile tissues - the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum.
The blood filling the erectile tissues compresses the veins, which helps to prevent blood from leaving...

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

5.5K
Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra....

Relationship Growth

Interpersonal relationships progress through stages, beginning with awareness and moving toward mutuality, where emotional connections deepen. While many relationships remain at moderate levels of mutuality, deeper connections form through self-disclosure, trust, and interdependence.Self-DisclosureSelf-disclosure involves revealing personal information, starting with surface-level details and gradually progressing to more intimate content. As trust grows, individuals feel more comfortable...

Summary

Vasectomy does not decrease sexual frequency in men or their partners. This study found vasectomized men and their partners had a higher likelihood of regular sexual activity compared to non-vasectomized individuals.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Contraception
  • Sexual Health

Background:

  • Men considering vasectomy often worry about future sexual potency, potentially leading to the use of less effective contraception.
  • Anxiety regarding sexual function post-vasectomy can influence contraceptive choices for couples.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between vasectomy and the frequency of sexual intercourse.
  • To address concerns about sexual potency following vasectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from the National Survey of Family Growth (cycles 6-7).
  • Comparison of sexual intercourse frequency between vasectomized and non-vasectomized men and their partners.
  • Multivariate logistic regression adjusted for demographic, socioeconomic, reproductive, and health factors.

Main Results:

  • Vasectomized men reported a higher average frequency of sexual intercourse (5.9 times/month) compared to non-vasectomized men (4.9 times/month).
  • Adjusted analysis showed vasectomized men had 81% higher odds of weekly intercourse.
  • Women partnered with vasectomized men had 46% higher odds of weekly intercourse compared to women partnered with non-vasectomized men.

Conclusions:

  • Vasectomy is not associated with a reduction in sexual frequency.
  • Findings suggest vasectomy is a viable contraceptive option without negatively impacting sexual activity.
  • This information can assist couples in making informed decisions about contraception.
