Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the association between DSP and academic performance in a large adolescent population.
  • To investigate potential mediating factors in this relationship.

  • Utilized data from the youth@hordaland-survey (N=8347) of Norwegian high-school students (ages 16-19).
  • Assessed DSP using self-report measures based on the International Classification of Sleep Disorders - Second Edition.
  • Obtained objective school performance data (GPA) from administrative registries.

Main Results:

  • DSP was significantly associated with increased odds of poor academic performance (lowest GPA quartile).
  • Adjustment for sociodemographics and lifestyle factors minimally affected the association.
  • School nonattendance substantially reduced the DSP-GPA link, with mediation analyses confirming indirect effects via school absence, sleepiness, and sleep duration.

Conclusions:

  • Poor academic performance in adolescents with DSP may be partly mediated by school attendance, daytime sleepiness, and short sleep duration.
  • Circadian disruption could independently impact academic outcomes.
  • Sleep assessment is crucial for addressing educational difficulties in adolescents.
