Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the relationship between force plate-measured variables during the swimming start push-off and subsequent start performance.
  • To identify key biomechanical indicators of efficient push-off in elite swimmers.
  • To correlate push-off dynamics with split times at 5, 10, and 15 meters.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-one female swimmers from the Slovenian national team participated.
  • Two types of starts (freestyle and undulatory) were performed on a portable force plate.
  • Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to analyze the relationship between push-off variables and split times.

Main Results:

  • Average horizontal acceleration and horizontal take-off velocity showed significant negative correlations with all measured split times (5, 10, 15m) for both freestyle and undulatory starts.
  • Resultant take-off velocity also significantly correlated with start performance.
  • No significant correlations were found between vertical force variables and swimming start performance.

Conclusions:

  • Horizontal take-off velocity and average horizontal acceleration are the most significant predictors of swimming start performance in experienced swimmers.
  • These horizontal metrics, derived from force plate data, can be used to monitor and improve push-off efficiency.
  • Vertical force components do not appear to be critical determinants of start performance in this population.
