Compact Bone

Most bones contain compact and spongy osseous tissue, but their distribution and concentration vary based on the bone's overall function.
Compact bone, also called cortical bone, is the denser, stronger of the two types of bone tissue. Summary

Image-guided bone biopsies are crucial for diagnosing bone tumors. For densely blastic lesions, use small biopsy samples (<5 mm) to prevent the specimen from getting stuck in the needle.

Background:

Image-guided biopsies are essential for accurate pathologic diagnosis of bone tumors.
Motorized, battery-powered bone marrow biopsy devices offer high accuracy for focal bone lesions.

Purpose of the Study:

To report two cases of densely blastic metastases where biopsy samples could not be retrieved from the needle.
To provide a recommendation for optimizing biopsy procedures in similar cases.

Main Methods:

Case report of two patients with densely blastic metastases.
Utilized image-guided, motorized bone marrow biopsy devices.
Analysis of specimen retrieval challenges.

Main Results:

In both presented cases, biopsy specimens from densely blastic metastases became lodged within the biopsy needle.
Successful retrieval of biopsy samples was impeded by the density of the bone lesions.

Conclusions:

Densely blastic bone lesions pose a risk of biopsy sample impaction within the needle.
It is recommended to obtain small biopsy samples (<5 mm) from densely blastic lesions to ensure successful specimen retrieval.
