Summary

Embalming procedures can create aortic dissection-like artifacts in cadavers, mimicking true antemortem conditions. This study found most identified dissections in embalmed bodies were artifacts, not actual disease.

Background:

  • Aortic dissection (AD) is a life-threatening condition affecting approximately 3 in 100,000 individuals annually.
  • A recent case report highlighted AD in an embalmed patient, raising questions about postmortem findings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the frequency of aortic dissection in embalmed cadavers.
  • To differentiate between true antemortem AD and embalming-induced artifacts.

Main Methods:

  • Gross examination of 80 embalmed cadavers for signs of aortic dissection.
  • Histopathologic evaluation to confirm findings and identify the cause.

  • Seven cases showed gross signs suggestive of AD.
  • Six of these were identified as artifacts caused by the embalming process.
