Household Wiring And Electrical Safety01:13

Household Wiring And Electrical Safety

2.0K
Companies that supply power to most modern households use three conductors, typically called a three-wire line. While one is neutral, the other two are both at 120 V but with opposite polarity, giving a voltage of 240 V between them. With a three-wire line, high-power appliances that require 240 V, such as electric stoves and clothes dryers, are linked between the two hot lines. 120 V appliances can be connected between the neutral and either of the hot lines. The neutral side, which is always...

Electrical Power01:07

Electrical Power

4.0K
Electric power is the product of current and voltage, represented in units of joules per second, or watts. For example, cars often have one or more auxiliary power outlets with which you can charge a cell phone or other electronic devices. These outlets may be rated at 20 amps and 12 volts, so that the circuit can deliver a maximum power of 240 watts. Consider a 25 Watt bulb and a 60 Watt bulb. The conversion of electrical energy produces heat and light, while the kinetic energy lost by the...

Insulation Coordination01:23

Insulation Coordination

635
Insulation coordination is the process of matching electric equipment's insulation strength with protective device characteristics to protect the equipment against expected overvoltages. This selection is based on engineering judgment and cost. Equipment can generally withstand short-duration high transient overvoltages, but repeated tests with identical waveforms can yield inconsistent results. As a result, standard impulse voltage waveforms are used for testing, defined by specific times...

Acid Mine Drainage01:19

Acid Mine Drainage

61
Mining activities that disturb sulfide-rich rocks, particularly those containing pyrite (FeS₂), initiate a cascade of geochemical and microbiological processes with serious environmental implications. When exposed to air and water, pyrite undergoes oxidation, releasing sulfate, ultimately forming sulfuric acid and mobilizing heavy metals into surrounding water systems. This phenomenon, known as acid mine drainage (AMD), results in low pH waters laden with toxic elements that threaten...

Electrical Current01:10

Electrical Current

7.7K
Electrical current is defined as the rate at which charge flows. When there is a large current present, such as that used to run a refrigerator, a large amount of charge moves through the wire in a small amount of time. If the current is small, such as that used to operate a handheld calculator, a small amount of charge moves through the circuit over a long period of time. The SI unit for current is the ampere (A), named for the French physicist André-Marie Ampère (1775–1836).

Electrical Energy01:10

Electrical Energy

1.9K
Using electric appliances for a longer period of time consumes more electrical energy and results in a higher electric bill. The energy produced by the transfer of electrons from one point to another is known as electrical energy. If power is delivered at a constant rate, the electrical energy can be defined as the product of power used by the device for a period of time. The energy unit on electric bills is the kilowatt-hour, where one kilowatt-hour is equivalent to 3.6 × 106 joules.

Summary

Electrical injuries in mining are disproportionately fatal, especially during maintenance. Failure to properly de-energize circuits is a leading cause of these mining accidents.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Safety and Health
  • Mining Engineering
  • Electrical Safety

Background:

  • Electrical injuries pose a significant risk in the mining industry.
  • Previous research has characterized general mining injuries, but specific focus on electrical incidents is needed.
  • Understanding the unique circumstances and causes of electrical injuries is crucial for prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze electrical injuries in the U.S. mining industry from 2000-2009.
  • To identify the circumstances and causal factors contributing to electrical injuries and fatalities.
  • To compare electrical injury rates and fatality risks across different mining sectors and employee types.

Main Methods:

  • Reviewed 865 electrical injury reports from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data (2000-2009).
  • Interpreted narrative descriptions of injury events.
  • Conducted a separate analysis of fatal electrical injuries.

Main Results:

  • 865 electrical injuries occurred, with 39 fatalities, indicating a high fatality rate.
  • Electrical injury rates were higher in coal mining, particularly underground operations.
  • Maintenance and repair activities accounted for 69% of injuries and 69% of fatalities, with "lock-out and tag" failures being a major factor.

Conclusions:

  • Electrical injuries are a serious and disproportionately fatal risk in mining.
  • Electrical maintenance and repair pose the highest risk, often due to inadequate de-energization procedures.
  • Preventive measures should focus on strict adherence to lock-out/tag-out procedures and robust power system maintenance.
