Endovascular stent-graft repair is a promising treatment for acute traumatic thoracic aortic transection, showing successful outcomes and no major complications in a recent study. This minimally invasive approach offers favorable short- and mid-term results for patients with this severe injury.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Surgery
- Trauma Surgery
- Endovascular Interventions
Background:
- Acute traumatic thoracic aortic transection is a life-threatening injury.
- Endovascular stent-graft repair is an emerging treatment modality.
Observation:
- Eleven patients with traumatic thoracic aortic transection were treated with endovascular stent-grafts.
- The majority of injuries involved the aortic isthmus.
- Treatment was initiated within 12 hours of diagnosis in most cases.
Findings:
- Successful stent-graft deployment was achieved in all patients.
- No procedure-related deaths, paraplegia, or ischemic complications occurred.
- One patient died postoperatively due to cardiac arrest unrelated to the procedure.
Implications:
- Thoracic endovascular aortic stenting is a safe and effective option for acute traumatic aortic transection.
- This technique demonstrates promising short- and mid-term outcomes.
- Further research should continue to evaluate long-term efficacy and safety.
