Disorders of the Male Reproductive System01:20

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

5.4K
Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra....

Male Sexual Response: Erection & Ejaculation

27.5K
Sexual stimulation can take various forms, such as physical touch and visual or auditory cues. When this happens, the parasympathetic reflex in the sacral portion of the spinal cord is activated. This reflex stimulates the release of nitric oxide (NO), which then dilates the arterioles in the penis, increasing blood flow to the erectile tissues - the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum.
The blood filling the erectile tissues compresses the veins, which helps to prevent blood from leaving...

Sex-linked Disorders

Like autosomes, sex chromosomes contain a variety of genes necessary for normal body function. When a mutation in one of these genes results in biological deficits, the disorder is considered sex-linked.

Psychosexual Stages of Personality: Genital01:23

Psychosexual Stages of Personality: Genital

2.2K
The genital stage is the final phase of Sigmund Freud's theory of psychosexual development, beginning at puberty, around age 12. During this stage, sexual energy shifts from self-focused interests to external individuals, marking the development of mature adult sexuality. Freud saw this phase as a time of sexual reawakening, with desires directed toward others outside the family. A healthy transition into this stage, according to Freud, signifies the emergence of two key aspects of adult...

Summary

Sexual dysfunction (SD) significantly worsens over 6 years in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Key predictors include longer follow-up, older age, disability, depression, and fatigue.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Sexual Medicine

Background:

  • Sexual dysfunction (SD) is prevalent yet undertreated in multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • Understanding the progression and predictors of SD in MS is crucial for patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To longitudinally track changes in sexual functioning over 3 and 6 years in an MS cohort.
  • To identify predictors of sexual dysfunction changes in patients with MS.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 93 MS patients (McDonald's criteria, 2001) were assessed at baseline, 3, and 6 years.
  • Szasz sexual functioning scale quantified SD presence and severity.
  • Generalized linear mixed regression models identified predictors of sexual problems.

Main Results:

  • A marked increase in reported SD symptoms was observed in both genders over the follow-up period.
  • Duration of follow-up, age, physical disability, depression, and fatigue independently predicted SD deterioration.
  • These factors significantly impacted sexual functioning over the 6-year observation.

Conclusions:

  • This study offers insights into the dynamic changes in sexual function among MS patients.
  • Identified predictors provide valuable information for managing SD in this population over time.
