Chronic Exercise Training and Circulating Irisin in Adults: A Meta-Analysis

Chronic exercise training significantly decreases circulating irisin levels in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). However, evidence from non-randomized studies (NRSs) remains inconclusive, highlighting the need for more robust research.

- In NRSs (n=113), the effect of exercise on irisin was trivial and non-significant (d = -0.04).

- Chronic exercise training significantly reduces circulating irisin levels based on RCT evidence.
- Evidence from NRSs is inconclusive regarding the impact of exercise on irisin.
- Future well-designed RCTs are needed, incorporating dietary intake and body composition/insulin sensitivity measures.
