Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination02:55

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

96.0K
Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture01:27

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

392
Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

Surveys02:16

Surveys

17.2K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

The Role of Culture01:23

The Role of Culture

516
Culture plays a crucial role in shaping self-identity and influencing thought and behavior, a foundational interest within social psychology. The multicultural perspective recognizes that individuals do not exist in a vacuum; instead, their experiences, perceptions, and actions are deeply influenced by the intersecting dimensions of their cultural, ethnic, and social group affiliations.Cultural Influence on Self-Identity and Social PerceptionCultural frameworks inform how individuals define...

Stereotype Content Model02:16

Stereotype Content Model

15.7K
The Stereotype Content Model (SCM) was first proposed by Susan Fiske and her colleagues (Fiske, Cuddy, Glick & Xu, 2002; see also Fiske, 2012 and Fiske, 2017). The SCM specifies that when someone encounters a new group, they will stereotype them based on two metrics: warmth—or that group’s perceived intent, and how likely they are to provide help or inflict harm—and competence—or their ability to carry out that objective. Depending on the warmth-competence...

Self Within Cultural Contexts01:30

Self Within Cultural Contexts

310
Cultural frameworks for understanding the self are often categorized into two broad orientations: individualism and collectivism. These paradigms influence how people define themselves, relate to others, and interpret their social worlds. Each orientation offers distinct perspectives on autonomy, responsibility, and the role of the individual within a community.Individualistic CulturesIn individualistic cultures like North America and Western Europe, identity is understood as autonomous and...

Summary

Grounded theory research rarely addresses racial/ethnic disparities in health. Most studies reviewed did not include diversity, suggesting a need for improved methods to analyze race/ethnicity

Area of Science:

  • Health Services Research
  • Qualitative Health Research
  • Health Disparities Research

Background:

  • National initiatives emphasize health research addressing racial/ethnic disparities.
  • Grounded theory (GT) research offers potential for understanding health experiences of minority populations.
  • The contribution of GT to health disparities research remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the extent to which grounded theory studies address racial/ethnic diversity.
  • To evaluate the role of racial/ethnic diversity in GT research within health disparities.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of 44 grounded theory studies published in Qualitative Health Research over five years.
  • Categorization of studies using a framework by Green et al. (2007) based on the role of racial/ethnic diversity.
  • Analysis of the status and significance afforded to racial/ethnic diversity in the reviewed studies.

Main Results:

  • Racial/ethnic diversity was a primary focus in only five studies.
  • One study considered diversity as complementary, and five as peripheral.
  • In 33 out of 44 studies, racial/ethnic diversity was absent.
  • The majority of GT studies did not significantly incorporate racial/ethnic diversity.

Conclusions:

  • Grounded theory research has limited current impact on health disparities research due to underrepresentation of racial/ethnic diversity.
  • Enhanced analytical techniques are needed to better examine the influence of race/ethnicity in GT studies.
  • Future GT research should prioritize the inclusion and analysis of racial/ethnic diversity to advance health disparities research.
