Microbial Biosensors

50
Microbial biosensors are analytical devices that utilize living microbes to detect specific substances through measurable signals. These devices consist of two main components: biosensing organisms and signal-transducing elements. Biosensing organisms, such as Escherichia coli or Saccharomyces cerevisiae, are typically housed in multiwell plates connected to transducers, enabling rapid, real-time detection of target analytes.Signal Generation MechanismWhen a target analyte—such as...

  • Nanotechnology
  • Cancer Diagnostics

Background:

  • Early detection of colon cancer is crucial for effective treatment.
  • Aptasensors offer a promising platform for sensitive and specific cancer cell detection.
  • Development of point-of-care diagnostic tools is needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and implement a novel aptasensor for colon cancer detection.
  • To functionalize electrodes with 11-mercaptoandecanoic acid (11-MUA) and a modified KCHA10a aptamer.
  • To evaluate the aptasensor's performance using colon cancer cell lines.

Main Methods:

  • Fabrication of aptasensor using functionalized electrodes (11-MUA and modified KCHA10a aptamer).
  • Utilized HCT 116, HT 29, and HEp-2 colon cancer cell lines.
  • Employed flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, and electrochemical cyclic voltammetry for verification.

Main Results:

  • Demonstrated successful binding between the aptasensor and target colon cancer cells.
  • Achieved a limit of detection (LOD) as low as seven cancer cells.
  • Verified aptasensor functionality through multiple analytical techniques.

Conclusions:

  • The developed aptasensor shows high sensitivity and specificity for colon cancer cell detection.
  • The aptasensor is suitable for point-of-care cancer disease diagnostics.
  • This technology has the potential to improve early colon cancer diagnosis and patient outcomes.
