Certain organic substances change color in dilute solution when the hydronium ion concentration reaches a particular value. For example, phenolphthalein is a colorless substance in any aqueous solution with a hydronium ion concentration greater than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH < 8.3). In more basic solutions where the hydronium ion concentration is less than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH > 8.3), it is red or pink. Substances such as phenolphthalein, which can be used to determine the pH of a solution, are...

Summary

New spectrophotometric thresholds for acrylic denture base resins were established. The perceptibility threshold was 1.71ΔE00 and the acceptability threshold was 4.00ΔE00, offering an alternative to visual assessment for color stability.

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Dental Materials
  • Color Science

Background:

  • Color stability is crucial for the aesthetics and longevity of acrylic denture base resins.
  • Current visual assessment methods (ISO 20795-1:2013) are subjective and may lack precision.
  • Spectrophotometric methods offer a more objective approach to evaluating color changes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish perceptibility and acceptability color difference thresholds for acrylic denture base resins using a spectrophotometric method.
  • To provide an objective alternative to the visual assessment method for color stability.
  • To investigate the relationship between color attribute differences (lightness, chroma, hue) and perceived thresholds.

Main Methods:

  • Preparation of 291 acrylic denture base resin disk specimens according to ISO 20795-1:2013.
  • Accelerated aging of specimens in a chamber (ISO 7491:2000) for 0-42 hours.
  • Measurement of color alterations using a spectrophotometer and the CIE L*a*b* colorimetric system.
  • Calculation of color differences using the CIEDE2000 formula.
  • In vitro perceptibility and acceptability assessments by 32 dental professionals.
  • Analysis of thresholds using an S-curve fitting procedure.

Main Results:

  • The 50:50% perceptibility threshold was determined to be 1.71ΔE00 (r(2)=0.88).
  • The 50:50% acceptability threshold was determined to be 4.00ΔE00 (r(2)=0.89).
  • The study provides quantitative data on color difference thresholds for acrylic denture base resins.

Conclusions:

  • The established thresholds of 1.71ΔE00 (perceptibility) and 4.00ΔE00 (acceptability) can serve as reliable indicators for evaluating the color stability of acrylic denture base resins.
  • The spectrophotometric method offers a precise and reproducible alternative to traditional visual assessment.
  • These findings contribute to improved quality control and standardization in the manufacturing of denture base materials.
