    Summary

Bulk-fill resin composites experience significant temperature increases during light curing. The highest temperatures were recorded within the composite, with the pulpal dentin showing the lowest increase, crucial for dental pulp safety.

    Area of Science:

    • Dental Materials Science
    • Polymer Chemistry
    • Biomaterials Engineering

    Background:

    • Photopolymerization of dental resin composites generates heat.
    • Bulk-fill composites offer clinical advantages but require thorough polymerization.
    • Understanding intra-oral temperature changes is vital for pulp vitality.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify temperature variations within bulk-fill resin composites.
    • To measure temperature changes at the pulpal dentin during curing.
    • To assess the thermal effects of photopolymerization in Class 1 cavities.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized SureFil SDR Flow bulk-fill composite in extracted third molars.
    • Employed eight thermocouples to record temperatures at multiple sites.
    • Monitored temperatures in the composite, pulpal dentin, and curing light tip at 36.5°C.

    Main Results:

    • The top center of the composite reached the highest temperature (72.3°C).
    • Pulpal dentin exhibited the lowest temperature increase (41.1°C).
    • Peak composite temperatures occurred early in light curing; curing light and pulpal dentin peaked later.

    Conclusions:

    • Bulk-fill composite polymerization generates significant heat, with localized variations.
    • The pulpal chamber experiences a moderate temperature rise, suggesting careful curing protocols are needed.
    • Further research should explore different bulk-fill materials and curing techniques.
