Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between four CVF organizational cultural types and key LSS implementation components.
  • To determine how organizational culture influences management involvement, use of LSS methods, and LSS infrastructure in hospitals.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was administered to 446 HR and quality managers in 223 hospitals across New England.
  • The Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI) was used to assess cultural types.
  • Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was employed to analyze 104 completed responses.

  • Management support was significantly influenced by organizational culture (F(3, 100)=4.89, p < 0.01).
  • Infrastructure (F(3, 100)=1.55, p=0.21) and use of LSS methods (F(3, 100)=1.34, p=0.26) were not significantly related to culture.
  • Post hoc analysis revealed significant interactions between management support and group/developmental cultures.

Conclusions:

  • Specific cultural characteristics, particularly those fostering management support, are vital for successful LSS implementation in hospitals.
  • Hospital staff can leverage this understanding of cultural values to enhance quality initiatives.
  • Managers can utilize insights into cultural underpinnings to improve LSS implementation strategies.
