Consistency in diagnostic suggestions does not influence the tendency to accept them

Residents did not accept more incorrect diagnostic suggestions after seeing correct ones. However, a general tendency to accept suggestions persists, potentially leading to diagnostic errors.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Clinical Decision-Making
- Diagnostic Reasoning
Background:
- Previous research indicates residents accept diagnostic suggestions, risking errors with incorrect advice.
- Existing studies often overlook the impact of encountering correct suggestions first in clinical practice.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate how the order of correct versus incorrect diagnostic suggestions affects residents' acceptance rates.
- To test the hypothesis that prior exposure to correct suggestions increases acceptance of subsequent incorrect ones.
Main Methods:
- Thirty-eight residents evaluated eight clinical cases with suggested diagnoses.
- Participants were divided into two groups: correct-then-incorrect (C/I) or incorrect-then-correct (I/C) suggestion sequences.
Main Results:
- No significant difference in evaluation scores between the C/I and I/C conditions was observed.
- A significant interaction revealed higher scores for correct suggestions compared to incorrect ones, irrespective of order.
Conclusions:
- The sequence of correct or incorrect diagnostic suggestions does not influence acceptance rates.
- Residents exhibit an overall inclination to accept diagnostic suggestions, posing a risk for diagnostic errors.
