Area of Science:

  • Nursing Education
  • Healthcare Workforce Development
  • Organizational Psychology

Background:

  • Effective orientation programs are crucial for new graduate nurses to provide safe patient care.
  • Little is known about the overall effectiveness of these programs from the graduate's perspective.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if new graduate nurses received structured orientation programs.
  • To assess the effectiveness of these programs from the graduate nurses' viewpoint.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey design was employed.
  • Data were collected from 100 graduate nurses across four Israeli institutions, with a 79% response rate.
  • A validated questionnaire with closed and open questions was used, showing high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.91-0.96).

Main Results:

  • Only 50.6% of surveyed nurses reported having a structured orientation program.
  • Structured orientation positively correlated with graduate nurse adaptation, ward satisfaction, and retention.
  • Received support also positively correlated with ward satisfaction; retention was linked to program, satisfaction, adaptation, and support.

Conclusions:

  • The delivery method of orientation programs significantly impacts graduate nurse satisfaction.
  • Tailored, one-to-one preceptor-based programs enhance satisfaction and may improve retention of competent nurses.
  • Programs neglecting individual needs or using informal approaches can lead to dissatisfaction.
