Summary

This study found that an erbium, chromium-doped yttrium, scandium, gallium, and garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser can safely remove lithium disilicate crowns. The laser proved effective for conservative crown removal, offering a viable alternative to traditional methods.

Area of Science:

  • Dental materials science
  • Laser dentistry
  • Prosthodontics

Background:

  • Laser use is expanding in dentistry, yet data on laser-assisted ceramic restoration removal is limited.
  • Existing information is largely anecdotal or comprises clinical reports.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish parameters for laser-assisted removal of lithium disilicate crowns.
  • To evaluate crown removal efficacy based on laser wattage and application time in vitro.

Main Methods:

  • An Er,Cr:YSGG laser was tested at various wattages (3-5W) on lithium disilicate specimens cemented to extracted molars.
  • Crown removal was assessed using different laser settings (3.5-4W, 30-90s) and compared to conventional rotary instruments.

Main Results:

  • Laser application at 3.5W and 4W demonstrated conservative crown removal.
  • No significant difference was found between laser wattage and application time combinations (P=.92).
  • Conventional methods required an average of 6 minutes and 1.8 instruments per crown.

Conclusions:

  • The Er,Cr:YSGG laser can be safely utilized for lithium disilicate crown removal with the tested settings.
  • Laser application offers a potentially more efficient method compared to traditional rotary instruments.
