Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Radiology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • External jugular phlebectasia is a rare, benign vascular anomaly characterized by dilation of the external jugular vein.
  • Diagnosis typically relies on imaging, with various techniques available.

Observation:

  • A case of external jugular phlebectasia is presented.
  • Intravenous digital subtraction angiography (DSA) was attempted but failed to visualize the phlebectatic lesion.

Findings:

  • The study highlights the limitations of intravenous DSA in diagnosing external jugular phlebectasia.
  • Direct injection of contrast media into the lesion proved to be the superior method for radiological demonstration.

Implications:

  • This finding suggests that direct injection techniques should be considered for accurate diagnosis of external jugular phlebectasia.
