Theory of Attribution II: Kelley's Covariation Theory01:29

Theory of Attribution II: Kelley's Covariation Theory

913
Attribution theory plays a crucial role in social psychology, helping to explain how individuals interpret the causes of behavior. One prominent model within this field is Harold Kelley's covariation theory, which provides a systematic approach to determining whether internal traits or external circumstances drive a person's actions. The model posits that individuals rely on three key types of information—consensus, consistency, and distinctiveness—to make these judgments.Consensus:...

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

14.4K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance01:20

Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance

1.2K
Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance (W), also known as Kendall's W, is a non-parametric statistical measure used to assess the agreement or concordance between multiple raters or judges when they rank a set of items. It is often used when you have ordinal data (ranks) and you want to see if there is consistency or consensus among the raters. It is widely applied in research areas such as psychology, medicine, and social sciences, where multiple judges are asked to rank or rate subjects...

Self-Discrepancy Theory

19.1K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Causes of Similarity-Dissimilarity Effect

338
The similarity-dissimilarity effect, a fundamental concept in social psychology, explains how interpersonal similarities and differences influence attraction and social interactions. This effect is supported by three key psychological perspectives: balance theory, social comparison theory, and consensual validation.Balance Theory and Cognitive ConsistencyBalance theory, developed by Fritz Heider, posits that individuals seek cognitive consistency in their relationships. When two people share...

Robbers Cave04:49

Robbers Cave

15.1K
During the 1950s, the landmark Robbers Cave experiment demonstrated that when groups must compete with one another, intergroup conflict, hostility, and even violence may result. At the Oklahoman summer camp, two troops of boys—termed the Rattlers and the Eagles—took part in a week-long tournament. During this time, their negativity culminated in derogatory name-calling, fistfights, and even vandalism and destruction of property. However, this work also revealed that such tension...

Summary

This study on work performance found that task performance correlations only appear when self-appraisal bias is controlled. Intraclass correlation analyses reveal only self-performance measures are consistent, highlighting issues in performance appraisal development and interrater agreement.

Area of Science:

  • Work and Organizational Psychology
  • Human Resources Management

Background:

  • Work performance is a critical dependent variable in organizational psychology.
  • Accurate performance appraisal is essential for employee development and organizational effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore relationships between citizenship and task performance using multiple appraisers.
  • To assess the consistency of performance measures via intraclass correlation coefficients.
  • To investigate the impact of self-appraisal bias on performance correlations.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized intraclass correlation coefficients for consistency analysis.
  • Developed job-family-specific performance appraisal questionnaires (self, supervisor, peer).
  • Included measures for both task and citizenship performance.

Main Results:

  • Significant correlations between task performance measures emerged only after controlling for self-appraisal bias.
  • Intraclass correlation analyses indicated consistency in self-performance measures (task and contextual).
  • Interrater agreement for performance measures was found to be lacking.

Conclusions:

  • Findings suggest challenges in developing reliable performance appraisal instruments.
  • The role of appraisers and the choice of consistency analysis methods are crucial.
  • Self-appraisal bias significantly impacts the perceived relationships in performance data.
