Elbow arthrodesis using the Ilizarov apparatus achieved solid fusion in 75% of patients with complex post-traumatic elbow issues. This technique offers advantages in infection control and union rates for challenging cases.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic surgery
- Trauma reconstruction
- Limb salvage surgery
Background:
- Elbow arthrodesis (EA) is an uncommon procedure with frequent challenges.
- Post-traumatic nonreconstructable elbow sequelae often require salvage procedures.
- Ilizarov apparatus offers a potential solution for complex elbow fusions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of the Ilizarov apparatus for elbow arthrodesis.
- To assess fusion rates and functional outcomes in patients with severe elbow deformities.
- To analyze the Ilizarov technique's advantages in managing complex post-traumatic elbow conditions.
Main Methods:
- A consecutive series of 4 patients with post-traumatic elbow sequelae underwent EA.
- The hybrid advanced Ilizarov technique was employed in all cases.
- Patients had a mean age of 46.7 years, with conditions including complications from total elbow replacement and nonunion.
Main Results:
- Complete union was achieved in 75% (3 of 4) of patients without further surgery.
- Fusion angles ranged from 90° to 120°, with an average union time of 23 weeks.
- One patient required amputation due to persistent infection; 3 patients returned to work.
Conclusions:
- Elbow arthrodesis (EA) using the Ilizarov technique is a reliable method for achieving solid fusion.
- The Ilizarov apparatus provides advantages such as infection control, early mobilization, and versatility.
- This technique offers a reproducible solution for achieving desired fusion angles in complex elbow reconstructions.
