Robbers Cave04:49

Robbers Cave

15.1K
During the 1950s, the landmark Robbers Cave experiment demonstrated that when groups must compete with one another, intergroup conflict, hostility, and even violence may result. At the Oklahoman summer camp, two troops of boys—termed the Rattlers and the Eagles—took part in a week-long tournament. During this time, their negativity culminated in derogatory name-calling, fistfights, and even vandalism and destruction of property. However, this work also revealed that such tension...

Deindividuation00:57

Deindividuation

31.1K
Deindividuation is a form of social influence on an individual’s behavior such that the individual engages in unusual or non-normal behavior while in a group setting. Why? Because in these group settings, the individual no longer sees themselves as an individual anymore, disinhibiting their behavior and personal restraint.

Guidelines for Writing Outcome

4.2K
When developing expected outcomes for a patient care plan, the nurse should adhere to the following recommendations:
Patient outcomes reflect the patient's response to the goal rather than what the nurse aims to achieve. Terminology should be observable and measurable to avoid the reader's interpretation. The desired outcome should be realistic and achievable in the designated care timeframe. Expected outcomes should align with adjunctive therapies. The outcome should enhance care...

Cause and Effect01:53

Cause and Effect

12.7K
While variables are sometimes correlated because one does cause the other, it could also be that some other factor, a confounding variable, is actually causing the systematic movement in our variables of interest. For instance, as sales in ice cream increase, so does the overall rate of crime. Is it possible that indulging in your favorite flavor of ice cream could send you on a crime spree? Or, after committing crime do you think you might decide to treat yourself to a cone?

Ending Relationships01:28

Ending Relationships

248
The dissolution of intimate relationships presents complex emotional and psychological challenges, particularly when emotional bonds are strong, the relationship is long-standing, and perceived alternatives are limited. This distress often intensifies in romantic breakups, where the initiator may experience greater turmoil than the rejected partner. Contributing factors include residual attachment, guilt over causing pain, and uncertainty about how to manage the situation. The stress is further...

Predicting Reaction Outcomes02:24

Predicting Reaction Outcomes

11.6K
Kinetics describes the rate and path by which a reaction occurs. In contrast, thermodynamics deals with state functions and describes the properties, behavior, and components of a system. It is not concerned with the path taken by the process and cannot address the rate at which a reaction occurs. Although it does provide information about what can happen during a reaction process, it does not describe the detailed steps of what appears on an atomic or a molecular level. On the other hand,...

Summary

Accidental oral ingestion of the party drug Poppers, an alkyl nitrite, can cause severe esophageal chemical burns. This case highlights the risk of painful dysphagia and long-term esophageal scarring from this substance.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Toxicology
  • Emergency Medicine

Background:

  • Party drugs, such as alkyl nitrites (Poppers), are increasingly used recreationally.
  • Poppers are typically inhaled for psychoactive effects.

Observation:

  • A case of an 18-year-old female presenting with severe, impassable esophagitis and dysphagia.
  • The patient reported ingesting an unknown liquid identified as Poppers.
  • Endoscopy revealed severe corrosive esophageal injury and stenosis.

Findings:

  • Accidental oral ingestion of Poppers can lead to life-threatening esophageal chemical burns.
  • The patient developed long-segment esophageal scarring and recurrent stenosis requiring multiple interventions.
  • Symptoms of painful dysphagia after ingesting unknown party drugs warrant suspicion of Poppers ingestion.

Implications:

  • Healthcare providers should consider Poppers ingestion in patients with unexplained severe esophagitis.
  • Early recognition and management are crucial to mitigate severe esophageal injury and long-term complications.
  • Public health awareness regarding the dangers of ingesting recreational drugs like Poppers is essential.
