Remote treatments effectively reduce obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms, showing comparable results to in-person care. This research supports developing remote stepped-care models for OCD management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically synthesize the existing literature on remote treatment efficacy for OCD.
  • To conduct a meta-analysis evaluating the impact of remote interventions on OCD symptoms.
  • To compare remote treatment outcomes against control conditions and face-to-face therapy.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive meta-analytic approach was employed.
  • Relevant studies were identified through electronic database searches and review of existing literature.
  • Eighteen studies involving 823 participants were included in the final analysis.

Main Results:

  • Remote OCD treatment demonstrated a large significant decrease in symptoms (g=1.17).
  • Remote interventions were more effective than control conditions (g=1.06) and comparable to face-to-face treatment (g=-0.21).
  • Both low-intensity (g=1.36) and high-intensity (g=1.64) remote treatments yielded substantial symptom reduction.

Conclusions:

  • Remote treatment is a highly effective modality for managing OCD symptoms.
  • Findings support the development of stepped-care models for OCD delivered entirely remotely.
  • Remote interventions can significantly improve access to care and reduce the burden of OCD.
