Hypermetabolism-organ failure syndrome: a metabolic response to injury

The hypermetabolism-organ failure syndrome, a common disease entity, continues to account for most of the ICU deaths in surgical patients. This article reviews the phases of the response to injury process that culminates in organ failure and describes the patterns it may take. Current therapy for hypermetabolism-organ failure syndrome is also reviewed.
