Background:

Shared decision making (SDM) is a cornerstone of effective doctor-patient collaboration.
SDM enhances patient satisfaction and confidence in medical choices.
The impact of SDM on disease-specific patient outcomes remains under investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To systematically evaluate the effects of shared decision making (SDM) on patient-relevant, disease-related endpoints.
To assess the quality and quantity of existing research on SDM's clinical impact.

Main Methods:

A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and the Cochrane Library for controlled intervention studies on SDM.
Intervention quality and risk of bias were assessed using predefined criteria.
Effect sizes for SDM's impact on patient-relevant outcomes were calculated.

Main Results:

Twenty-two trials were analyzed, exhibiting significant heterogeneity in patient populations, interventions, and implementation.
In 10 trials (57% of endpoints), SDM significantly improved relevant outcomes; the median effect size was 0.53.
Across all 22 trials, 39% of relevant outcomes showed significant improvement compared to control groups.

Conclusions:

Current research on SDM's effect on patient-relevant, disease-related endpoints is limited in quantity and quality.
While nearly half of the reviewed trials suggest positive effects, definitive conclusions cannot be drawn.
Standardization of SDM interventions and rigorous clinical studies are necessary for clear evidence.
