Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1α (HIF-1α) interacts with BK polyomavirus (BKV), increasing its replication. This interaction, observed in kidney transplant recipients, suggests hypoxia is a risk factor for polyomavirus-associated nephropathy (PVAN).
