Summary

Patients with haemophilia (PwH) show significant muscle strength deficits in extremities and back muscles, but not generally. Early complex strength training is recommended for comprehensive haemophilia treatment.

Background:

  • Muscle strength deficits are common in patients with haemophilia (PwH).
  • Accurate measurement of complex muscle strength is crucial for understanding and managing these deficits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a novel complex strength measurement method.
  • To assess muscle strength differences between PwH and healthy controls using this new method.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a complex strength measurement protocol.
  • Recruited 20 severe haemophilia A patients and 20 controls for maximum isometric strength testing.
  • Assessed reliability through re-test measurements in controls.

Main Results:

  • The developed method demonstrated high reliability (ICC 0.764–0.934).
  • PwH exhibited significant strength reductions (19–35%) in triceps brachii, biceps brachii, latissimus dorsi, biceps femoris, and quadriceps femoris.
  • No significant differences were observed in abdominal or hand strength.

Conclusions:

  • PwH do not have a general muscle strength deficit.
  • Deficits are most pronounced in upper/lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Complex muscle strength training should be integrated early into haemophilia treatment plans.
