Background:

  • Children with spatial processing disorder (SPD) struggle with sound localization, requiring better classroom acoustics.
  • Previous research indicates the LiSN & Learn program, using spatialized sound, can address this deficit.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if auditory training improvements in spatial processing are specific to the LiSN & Learn program.
  • To compare the efficacy of LiSN & Learn with another auditory training program, Earobics.

Main Methods:

  • A blinded controlled study involved ten children (aged 6-9) diagnosed with SPD.
  • Participants were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of either LiSN & Learn or Earobics auditory training.
  • Spatial processing ability was assessed using the Listening in Spatialized Noise - Sentences test (LiSN-S).

Main Results:

  • The LiSN & Learn group showed significant post-training improvements on LiSN-S spatial processing measures (P=0.03 to 0.0008).
  • The Earobics group did not show significant improvements in spatial processing (P=0.5 to 0.7).
  • Parent and teacher questionnaires indicated greater real-world listening improvements for the LiSN & Learn group.

Conclusions:

  • LiSN & Learn training effectively enhances binaural processing and speech-in-noise understanding in children with SPD.
  • Non-spatialized auditory training (Earobics) does not yield similar benefits.
  • Deficit-specific auditory remediation is crucial for improving listening skills in children with SPD.
