Darier disease (DD) is a rare genetic skin disorder. This study found oral doxycycline monotherapy effectively treated a patient with extensive DD, offering a new treatment option.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology
- Genetics
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Darier disease (DD) is a rare, dominantly inherited genodermatosis.
- It is characterized by acantholysis and abnormal keratinization, often proving difficult to manage.
- Current treatments, including systemic retinoids, have limited success and potential side effects.
Observation:
- A patient with extensive Darier disease was treated with oral doxycycline.
- Doxycycline is an antibiotic with reported efficacy in Hailey-Hailey disease, a similar condition.
- Hailey-Hailey disease shares pathogenic similarities with Darier disease.
Findings:
- The patient with Darier disease showed a dramatic response to oral doxycycline monotherapy.
- This suggests doxycycline may be an effective treatment for Darier disease.
- The treatment was well-tolerated, with no significant adverse effects reported.
Implications:
- Oral doxycycline monotherapy presents a promising alternative treatment for Darier disease.
- Further research is warranted to confirm doxycycline's efficacy and safety in a larger cohort of DD patients.
- This finding could improve management strategies for this challenging genodermatosis.
