Relation between Poisson's ratio, Modulus of Elasticity and Modulus of Rigidity01:15

Relation between Poisson's ratio, Modulus of Elasticity and Modulus of Rigidity

728
Deformation occurs in axial and transverse directions when an axial load is applied to a slender bar. This deformation impacts the cubic element within the bar, transforming it into either a rectangular parallelepiped or a rhombus, contingent on its orientation. This transformation process induces shearing strain. Axial loading elicits both shearing and normal strains. Applying an axial load instigates equal normal and shearing stresses on elements oriented at a 45° angle to the load axis.

The quantity that describes the deformation of a body under stress is known as strain. Strain is given as a fractional change in either length, volume, or geometry under tensile, volume (also known as bulk), or shear stress, respectively, and is a dimensionless quantity. The strain experienced by a body under tensile or compressive stress is called tensile or compressive strain, respectively. In contrast, the strain experienced under bulk stress and shear stress is known as volume and shear...

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering

Background:

  • Stretchable electronic systems are designed to accommodate mechanical strain.
  • Current literature lacks a precise, unified definition of "stretchable" in this context.
  • Diverse accommodation mechanisms exist, including intrinsic properties, composite structures, and crack formation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To clarify the definition and terminology of stretchable electronic systems.
  • To provide a comprehensive overview of strain accommodation mechanisms.
  • To reduce imprecision in scientific discourse regarding stretchability.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review and analysis of existing research on stretchable electronics.
  • Categorization of strain accommodation mechanisms.
  • Synthesis of findings to propose a clearer definition.

Main Results:

  • Identification of multiple, distinct mechanisms for accommodating strain in electronic systems.
  • Demonstration of how these mechanisms contribute to the ambiguity of the term "stretchable."
  • Highlighting the need for standardized terminology.

Conclusions:

  • The term "stretchable" requires a more precise definition within the scientific community.
  • Understanding the specific strain accommodation mechanism is crucial for characterizing stretchable systems.
  • Standardized terminology will enhance clarity and reproducibility in research.
