  • Postoperative day 4 assessment of sensory dysfunction area (pin prick test).
  • Follow-up at 4-6 months to determine persistent post-sternotomy pain.

    • No association found between the area of acute sensory dysfunction (hyperalgesia) and persistent pain.
    • Independent predictors of persistent post-sternotomy pain identified: smoking and high postoperative day 1 pain score.
    • Prevalence of persistent pain: 38% via questionnaire, 15% via clinical examination.

    Conclusions:

    • Acute phase sensory dysfunction measurement is not recommended for predicting persistent post-sternotomy pain.
    • Smoking and early postoperative pain are significant risk factors.
    • Questionnaire-based pain evaluation may overestimate prevalence compared to clinical examination.
