    Background:

    • Cervical cancer is a significant health concern globally.
    • The p53 tumor suppressor gene plays a crucial role in cancer development.
    • Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in key genes like p53 are investigated for their potential role in cancer susceptibility and prognosis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between the p53 codon 72 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and the risk of cervical cancer in Korean women.
    • To determine if this p53 SNP influences the prognosis of cervical cancer.

    Main Methods:

    • Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes of patients with cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), cervical adenocarcinoma, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) III, and healthy controls.
    • Genotyping for the p53 codon 72 polymorphism (Pro/Pro, Pro/Arg, Arg/Arg) was performed using PCR.
    • Statistical analyses included Chi-Square tests, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, and logistic regression.

    Main Results:

    • No significant differences in p53 codon 72 genotype frequencies were observed between the overall cervical cancer groups (SCC, CIN III) and controls.
    • A significant association was found in the cervical adenocarcinoma group, where the Arg/Arg genotype was associated with a reduced risk.
    • No significant differences in 5-year survival rates were found across the groups based on the p53 codon 72 genotype.

    Conclusions:

    • The Arg/Arg homozygosity at the p53 codon 72 locus may act as a protective factor against the development of cervical adenocarcinoma.
    • The p53 codon 72 SNP does not appear to significantly influence the overall risk or prognosis of cervical cancer in this Korean population, except for adenocarcinoma.
