Cycloplegic refraction is essential for young adults, particularly hypermetropes, to accurately detect latent refractive errors. This study found young hypermetropic adults have significant latent hypermetropia, while myopic adults show pseudomyopia.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Optometry
- Refractive Error Correction
Background:
- Accurate refractive error correction is crucial for young adults.
- The necessity of cycloplegic refraction in this demographic remains debated.
- This study investigates refractive error measurement differences in young adults.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare non-cycloplegic and cycloplegic spherical equivalent (SE) refractive error measurements.
- To determine the necessity of cycloplegic refraction in young adults (18-21 years).
- To identify differences in refractive error detection between myopic and hypermetropic young adults.
Main Methods:
- Prospective study of 1400 eyes from 700 young adult soldiers (18-21 years).
- Cycloplegic refraction performed using cyclopentolate 1% after a 40-minute waiting period.
- Comparison of non-cycloplegic and cycloplegic auto-refractor measurements.
Main Results:
- A mean difference of 0.68 ± 0.83 D was found between non-cycloplegic and cycloplegic SE measurements.
- Hypermetropic individuals showed significantly larger differences (1.30 ± 0.90 D) than myopic individuals (0.46 ± 0.68 D).
- Moderate hypermetropes exhibited greater refractive error differences compared to mild or severe hypermetropes.
Conclusions:
- Young hypermetropic adults exhibit +1 to +2 D of latent hypermetropia.
- Young myopic adults demonstrate approximately -0.5 D of pseudomyopia.
- Cycloplegic refraction is recommended for young hypermetropic adults presenting with asthenopia symptoms.
