Otomycosis in Jos: Predisposing factors and Management
1Department of Ear Nose Throat Head & Neck Surgery, University of Jos & Jos University Teaching Hospital, Plateau State.
Otomycosis, a common ear infection, is often diagnosed clinically and more prevalent in older females, particularly housewives and civil servants. Treatment with clotrimazole-containing antifungal eardrops is effective for this fungal condition.
Area of Science:
- Otolaryngology
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Otomycosis is a common yet challenging otologic condition affecting the external auditory canal.
- Symptoms include pruritus, otalgia, and hypoacusis, causing frustration for patients and clinicians.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify predisposing factors for otomycosis.
- To outline the management strategies for otomycosis in a specific clinical setting.
Main Methods:
- A retrospective review of 35 patients diagnosed with otomycosis.
- Data collected from January 2012 to March 2013 at Jos University Teaching Hospital.
- Medical data analyzed for clinical diagnosis and treatment outcomes.
Main Results:
- Otomycosis predominantly affected females (2:1 ratio) in the 41-50 age group.
- Unilateral cases were most common, with higher incidence during the dry season.
- Housewives and civil servants represented the largest occupational groups affected; diabetes mellitus was noted in one patient.
Conclusions:
- Predisposing factors for otomycosis are present in the Jos environment.
- Clinical examination is often sufficient for diagnosis.
- Candida species were the most common causative organisms, responding well to clotrimazole-based treatments.
