Summary

Most hospitals now have electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) policies, often integrated into existing tobacco-free campus rules. Effective communication of these e-cigarette policies to staff, patients, and visitors needs improvement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the prevalence of e-cigarette policies in North Carolina hospitals.
  • To examine the implementation, communication, motivators, and barriers of these policies.
  • To understand hospital perspectives on prohibiting e-cigarette use on campus.

  • A survey was distributed to all 121 hospitals in North Carolina.
  • Seventy-five hospitals (62% response rate) completed the survey.

  • Hospitals are actively addressing the challenge of e-cigarette use to maintain smoke-free environments.
