Area of Science:

  • Occupational therapy
  • Addiction rehabilitation
  • Public health

Background:

  • Addictive disorders significantly impact individuals' occupational functioning.
  • Occupational therapists are well-positioned to aid in addiction recovery.
  • Occupation-based interventions utilize meaningful activities to structure time and foster purpose.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the effectiveness of occupation-based interventions versus treatment as usual for addictive disorders.
  • To assess short and long-term recovery outcomes in individuals with addictive disorders undergoing occupation-based interventions.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted across multiple databases.
  • 1095 articles were screened, with 26 included for qualitative synthesis and 8 for quantitative analysis.
  • Inclusion criteria focused on prospective studies of occupation-based interventions for addictive disorders.

Main Results:

  • Occupation-based interventions in work, leisure, and social participation were identified for treating addictive disorders.
  • Interventions focused on social participation consistently showed better outcomes than control groups.
  • Quantitative analysis of 8 studies indicated leisure interventions had larger effect sizes than social participation interventions.

Conclusions:

  • Occupation-based interventions, particularly in leisure and social participation, can enhance addiction recovery.
  • Leisure-focused occupation-based interventions appear to be more effective than social participation interventions.
  • Further research is warranted to optimize occupation-based strategies for addiction rehabilitation.
