Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I01:25

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I

3.0K
A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.
The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...

Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

19.1K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

The Scientific Method02:40

The Scientific Method

67.2K
Research is what makes the difference between facts and opinions. Facts are observable realities, and opinions are personal judgments, conclusions, or attitudes that may or may not be accurate. In the scientific community, facts can be established only using evidence collected through empirical research.

Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

695
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

Regression Toward the Mean01:52

Regression Toward the Mean

7.3K
Regression toward the mean (“RTM”) is a phenomenon in which extremely high or low values—for example, and individual’s blood pressure at a particular moment—appear closer to a group’s average upon remeasuring. Although this statistical peculiarity is the result of random error and chance, it has been problematic across various medical, scientific, financial and psychological applications. In particular, RTM, if not taken into account, can interfere when...

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

389
The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...

Summary

Testing Theory-based Quantitative Predictions (TTQP) offers a quantitative alternative to Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST) for theory evaluation. This study confirmed many predictions of the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) using TTQP, supporting its utility in psychological research.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Behavioral Science
  • Health Psychology

Background:

  • Traditional Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST) is often inadequate for robust theory testing.
  • Testing Theory-based Quantitative Predictions (TTQP) provides a more appropriate framework by focusing on explicit effect size predictions derived from theory.
  • The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) is a widely used model for behavior change.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe and illustrate the TTQP approach as an alternative to NHST.
  • To replicate and extend the testing of 40 a priori quantitative predictions derived from the Transtheoretical Model (TTM).
  • To evaluate the utility of TTQP in a smoking cessation study.

Main Methods:

  • Quantitative predictions of effect sizes (ω(2)) were generated based on the TTM for stage movement over 12 months.
  • Predictions were tested on a large sample (N = 3,923) of smokers undergoing a cessation program.
  • Predictions were recalibrated from a prior study, and 99% confidence intervals were used for hypothesis testing.

Main Results:

  • Out of 40 predictions, 32 were confirmed in the current sample.
  • Eight predictions were not confirmed, with reasons including the need for recalibration (4), sampling fluctuation (1), or potential theory revision (3).
  • The study demonstrated the practical application and challenges of TTQP in evaluating psychological theories.

Conclusions:

  • The results provide substantial support for the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) in the context of smoking cessation.
  • Testing Theory-based Quantitative Predictions (TTQP) is a viable and informative method for theory testing in psychological and behavioral sciences.
  • The study highlights the importance of refining quantitative predictions and considering theory revisions based on empirical evidence.
