Insights
This study details the fourth case of a choledochal cyst diagnosed before birth, found at 15 weeks gestation. Treatment was successful, with distal obstruction suspected as the cause.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Fetal Medicine
- Gastroenterology
Background:
- Choledochal cysts are rare congenital bile duct anomalies.
- Antenatal diagnosis of choledochal cysts is uncommon, posing diagnostic and management challenges.
Observation:
- A choledochal cyst was identified via antenatal ultrasound at 15 weeks gestation.
- This represents the fourth reported case of prenatal diagnosis.
Findings:
- The case involved successful surgical management of the antenatally diagnosed choledochal cyst.
- Evidence suggests distal obstruction as the likely etiology.
Implications:
- Early prenatal diagnosis facilitates timely intervention and improved outcomes for choledochal cysts.
- Understanding the etiology, such as distal obstruction, can inform future management strategies.
Abstract:
We present the fourth case of antenatally diagnosed choledochal cyst--which was found at 15 weeks' gestation--and its subsequent treatment. We believe that the etiology was distal obstruction.
