This study addresses Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system vulnerabilities by proposing a secure Distributed Network Protocol version 3 (DNP3). The enhanced DNP3 protocol integrates cryptographic security at the application layer to mitigate common SCADA security challenges.
Area of Science:
- Industrial Control Systems Security
- Network Protocol Security
- Cybersecurity Engineering
Background:
- Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems face significant security vulnerabilities.
- Existing security mechanisms are often insufficient due to insecure real-time protocols and open internet-based communication.
- SCADA systems remain susceptible to compromise, highlighting the need for robust security solutions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review common security challenges in SCADA/protocol transmissions.
- To propose a secure design for the Distributed Network Protocol version 3 (DNP3).
- To implement a cryptographic security solution within the DNP3 protocol stack.
Main Methods:
- Review of existing SCADA security challenges and protocol vulnerabilities.
- Design of a modified DNP3 protocol incorporating security features.
- Implementation of cryptographic mechanisms within the DNP3 application layer.
Main Results:
- Identification of key security issues prevalent in SCADA systems and their communication protocols.
- Development of a secure DNP3 protocol tailored for SCADA environments.
- Successful integration of cryptographic security at the DNP3 application layer.
Conclusions:
- The proposed secure DNP3 protocol enhances SCADA system security.
- Cryptographic security integrated into the DNP3 stack effectively addresses protocol vulnerabilities.
- This approach provides a more resilient security framework for SCADA communications.
