Ultrasonography01:17

Ultrasonography

8.4K
Ultrasonography is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the body's internal structures. It is a non-invasive and safe procedure that does not involve the use of ionizing radiation, making it widely used in various medical fields. Ultrasonography is used to study heart function, blood flow in the neck or extremities, certain conditions such as gallbladder disease, and fetal growth and development.

Area of Science:

  • Robotics
  • Medical Imaging
  • Calibration Techniques

Background:

  • Ultrasound (US) calibration is crucial for robotic and tracked US systems, requiring high accuracy (submillimeter).
  • Traditional US calibration is time-consuming and repetitive, hindering frequent recalibration necessary for maintaining precision.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a novel, automated framework for robot-assisted US calibration.
  • To eliminate the need for temporal calibration in robotic US systems.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized an active echo (AE) phantom to guide robotic arm motion for automated data collection.
  • Combined AE's self-localization in US images with robotic arm automation for calibration.
  • Implemented a framework for robot tooltip to US image calibration.

Main Results:

  • Automated calibration demonstrated comparable reconstruction precision and repeatability to manual methods.
  • Achieved a 58% reduction in data collection time compared to manual calibration.
  • Automated calibration consistently converged, unlike manual methods, highlighting its robustness.

Conclusions:

  • The automated US calibration framework is a viable solution for applications demanding frequent recalibration.
  • This method reduces user burden and improves efficiency in robotic US system calibration.
  • The automated approach maintains submillimeter accuracy essential for precise medical applications.
