Summary

Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) effectively treats neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. However, skiing accidents can damage SNM devices, requiring reprogramming or replacement to restore function.

Background:

  • Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) is a common complication following spinal cord injury (SCI).
  • Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is an established treatment for refractory NLUTD, improving bladder control and quality of life.

Observation:

  • Three patients with SCI-related NLUTD successfully treated with SNM resumed recreational activities, including skiing.
  • These patients experienced decreased SNM effectiveness after sustaining skiing accidents.

Findings:

  • Post-accident evaluations revealed impulse generator (IPG) defects and/or electrode dislocations in the affected patients.
  • Reprogramming or replacement of the IPG and/or electrodes successfully restored SNM function in all cases.

Implications:

  • Trauma from falls and accidents, such as those sustained during skiing, poses a risk to the integrity of SNM systems.
  • Patients with SNM devices should be counseled on the potential for device damage from physical trauma and advised on protective measures.
