Summary

A new tablet application, the Computerized Table Setting Test (CTST), effectively evaluates unilateral spatial neglect in stroke patients. It shows promise for diagnosing and monitoring neglect, correlating well with traditional tests.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Medical Technology

Background:

  • Unilateral neglect is characterized by a failure to respond to left-sided stimuli.
  • Evaluating unilateral spatial neglect is crucial for stroke patient care.
  • Existing evaluation methods can be time-consuming or less accessible.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a novel tablet-based application for assessing unilateral spatial neglect.
  • To investigate the feasibility and diagnostic accuracy of the Computerized Table Setting Test (CTST) in stroke patients.

Main Methods:

  • The Computerized Table Setting Test (CTST) was developed for tablet devices.
  • Forty acute ischemic stroke patients and 10 healthy controls were enrolled.
  • The CTST measures horizontal dish deviation, selection tendency, and time to set a table.

Main Results:

  • CTST parameters correlated significantly with conventional neglect tests.
  • Patients with right hemispheric infarction and neglect showed significantly higher horizontal deviation.
  • Selection tendency and time differed significantly between neglect patients and controls.

Conclusions:

  • The CTST is a feasible and comparable tool for evaluating unilateral spatial neglect.
  • This tablet application offers a potential new method for the diagnosis and follow-up of neglect.
  • The CTST may improve the efficiency and accessibility of neglect assessments.
