Amyloid Fibrils

12.9K
Amyloid fibrils are aggregates of misfolded proteins.  Under most circumstances, misfolded proteins are either refolded by chaperone proteins or degraded by the proteasome. However, in the case of a mutation or a disease, these proteins can accumulate to form large clusters and often further assemble to form elongated fibers, called fibrils.
Amyloid deposits were observed as early as 1639 in the liver and the spleen.   In 1854, Rudolph Virchow performed iodine staining,...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

This case report highlights a rare instance of sinonasal amyloidosis, a condition mimicking nasal malignancy. Early diagnosis through histopathology and immunohistochemistry is crucial for effective management of this rare head and neck entity.

Area of Science:

  • Otorhinolaryngology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Primary localized amyloidosis is rare in the head and neck, with the larynx being the most common site.
  • Amyloidosis localized to the sinonasal tract is exceptionally rare.
