Background:

  • Accurate staging of malignant lymphoma requires comprehensive evaluation of bone marrow involvement.
  • Traditional bone marrow biopsy may have limitations in detecting infiltration, potentially leading to false-negative results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of scintigraphy, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and bone marrow biopsy in detecting bone marrow infiltration in lymphoma patients.
  • To assess the role of imaging modalities as adjuncts to biopsy in lymphoma staging.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluated bone marrow in 107 patients with Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma using scintigraphy, MR imaging, and biopsy.
  • Classified results from imaging and biopsy into normal (class 0), reactive changes (class 1), or suspicious for infiltration (class 2).

    • Routine inclusion of scintigraphy and MR imaging in lymphoma staging protocols is recommended.
