    Background:

    • Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a primary cause of vision loss in type 2 diabetes.
    • DME results from abnormal permeability of macular capillaries.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of 577 nm micropulse laser therapy for DME.
    • To assess changes in visual acuity and retinal thickness post-treatment.

    Main Methods:

    • The study included 23 eyes from 15 patients with focal or diffuse DME.
    • A 577 nm micropulse laser was applied to the macula using a spot-placing technique.
    • An average of three treatment sessions were administered per eye.

    Main Results:

    • Average central retinal thickness (CRT) decreased significantly from 380.4 µm to 301.0 µm after 12 months (p<0.05).
    • Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) showed a non-significant average decrease of -2.7 letters after 12 months (p>0.05).
    • 61% of eyes experienced visual improvement or stabilization, and 83% showed DME decrease or stabilization.

    Conclusions:

    • Micropulse laser therapy is an effective, scar-free treatment for DME, improving CRT and stabilizing vision.
    • Combining laser therapy with anti-VEGF treatments may be beneficial for persistent or severe DME.
    • The study suggests optimizing laser spot placement for improved outcomes.
