Renal artery embolization in severe nephrotic syndrome

Renal artery embolization (RAE) effectively reduced proteinuria and improved albumin levels in severe nephrotic syndrome patients. This interventional radiology procedure showed promise for managing nephrotic syndrome complications with minimal adverse events.

Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy and safety of RAE in managing severe symptomatic nephrotic syndrome.

Main Methods:
- Eight patients with severe symptomatic nephrotic syndrome underwent transcatheter renal artery embolization (RAE) using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA).
- Clinico-demographic data and baseline laboratory values (proteinuria, albumin, CRP, LDL cholesterol) were collected.
- Post-procedure outpatient laboratory values were assessed.
Main Results:
- Bilateral RAE was performed in seven patients (simultaneous or sequential).
- Two patients experienced self-limited postembolization syndrome (flank pain, fever, leukocytosis).
- No major technical complications occurred; serum albumin increased and LDL cholesterol decreased significantly. All but one patient became anuric.
Conclusions:
- Renal artery embolization (RAE) appears effective in ameliorating complications of severe nephrotic syndrome.
- The procedure was associated with significant improvements in albumin and LDL cholesterol levels.
- RAE demonstrated a favorable safety profile with no major technical complications in this cohort.
