Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of contraction bias and Weber's law in the underestimation of body weight and size.
  • To determine how these perceptual biases affect the ability to recognize weight gain.
  • To explore the implications for weight management behaviors.

Main Methods:

  • Experiment 1: 29 women estimated the weight of 120 women with varying body mass.
  • Experiment 2: 28 women performed a 2-alternative forced choice task to judge body weight differences.
  • Statistical analyses were used to assess the impact of body mass index (BMI) on weight and size discrimination.

Main Results:

  • Participants progressively underestimated the weight of overweight and obese bodies (Experiment 1).
  • A significant effect of BMI on the just noticeable difference for discriminating body weight was observed for both 3D models and digital images (Experiment 2).
  • Increased BMI correlated with greater underestimation of weight and reduced ability to detect size changes.

Conclusions:

  • Contraction bias and Weber's law contribute to the underestimation of body weight and size.
  • These perceptual biases make it progressively harder to recognize weight gain as BMI increases.
  • Impaired recognition of weight gain may compromise weight control behaviors and contribute to obesity.
