Chronic Pancreatitis I: Introduction

871
The pancreas, an elongated and flat gland situated behind the stomach, serves a vital function in digesting food and managing blood sugar levels.
Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas, which occurs when the immune system becomes active and causes swelling, pain, and disruptions in organ function. Pancreatitis can manifest as either an acute or chronic condition.
Acute pancreatitis arises suddenly and lasts for a brief duration, while chronic pancreatitis is a long-term affliction...

Pancreas

3.1K
The pancreas, an essential organ in the human body, is a pinkish-gray elongated structure located posterior to the stomach. It extends laterally from the duodenum towards the spleen and is firmly bound to the posterior wall of the abdominal cavity. The organ's surface has a lumpy, lobular texture that gives it a unique appearance.
The broad head of the pancreas lies within the loop formed by the duodenum, while its slender body reaches towards the spleen. The tail of the pancreas is short...

Summary

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) is a safe and effective procedure for diagnosing and managing pancreas divisum. This study found ERCP successfully impacted patient management with no procedure-related mortality.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Endoscopic Procedures
  • Pancreatic Diseases

Background:

  • Pancreas divisum (PD) is a congenital anomaly of the pancreaticobiliary system.
  • Management of PD often involves endoscopic interventions.
  • Evaluating the safety and efficacy of these interventions is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess complications, technical success, and diagnostic yield of Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) in patients with pancreas divisum.
  • To review endoscopic management options for pancreas divisum.
  • To determine the impact of ERCP on patient management.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive study analyzing all ERCP procedures performed in patients diagnosed with pancreas divisum.
  • Data collected from January 2007 to December 2013 at Civil Hospital, Karachi.
  • Success defined by diagnostic information or successful endoscopic therapy.

Main Results:

  • Pancreas divisum was identified in 17 out of 3600 patients (0.47%).
  • ERCP was performed for diagnostic (41.2%) and therapeutic (58.8%) purposes.
  • No procedure-related mortality was observed; ERCP affected management in 88.2% of patients.

Conclusions:

  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-pancreatography is a safe and feasible procedure for patients with pancreas divisum.
  • ERCP provides valuable diagnostic and therapeutic benefits for managing PD.
  • The study supports the role of ERCP in the clinical management of pancreas divisum.
