Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Background:

Patient-nurse relationships significantly impact older adults' quality of life in chronic care.
Understanding patient perspectives is crucial for enhancing relational care.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate the Humanistic Relationship Importance Scale (HRIS).
To assess older patients' views on essential elements in nurse-patient interactions within chronic care settings.

Main Methods:

Scale development based on humanistic nursing theory.
Initial testing with 40 patients, followed by factor analysis of 249 patients in Ontario, Canada.
Assessment of internal consistency, stability, reliability, and construct validity.

Main Results:

The 24-item HRIS demonstrated strong internal consistency (α = .87), stability, and reliability.
Factor analysis yielded a robust five-factor solution.
Construct validity was confirmed, supporting the scale's accuracy.

Conclusions:

The HRIS is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring older patients' perspectives on nurse-patient relationships in chronic care.
The scale can be utilized to evaluate healthcare professionals' relational skills and the effectiveness of interventions aimed at improving relational care.
